Spring Cleaning is here and SERVICE is in the air

Building Clean Up Week is an innovative program, sponsored by Space & Capital Resources, to help the campus community purge junk in order to create more usable space. So far, staff, faculty, and students have included and excelled together to clear out thousands of pounds of old furniture, chemicals, paper, and office supplies to be thrown away or recycled. Read how the Clean Up not only maximizes space, but also increases safety and sustainability across campus — and how you too can use campus resources to do a little spring cleaning.

Operation Simplify: from 22,000 to 160

UC Berkeley job postings now reflect Operating Principles

Human Resources, Public Affairs and Operating Principles "included and excelled together" to create standardized language for all job postings on jobs.berkeley.edu. The new language describies what makes UC Berkeley an employer of choice. Now, all job postings across the university refer to our desired workplace culture, and invite all those who share our values to apply for open positions at UC Berkeley.

Operating Priniciples at SummerFest 2013

The Operating Principles team handed out hundreds of Thank You cards to an appreciative staff at Summerfest 2013! Kudos Page featured in article about ways to cultivate gratitude at work

The blog of the Greater Good Science Center featured the Kudos page and the Appreciate feature of the Operating Principles website in an article about innovative ways that employees can thank one another for their contributions in the workplace.

The Berkeleyan features "Kudo of the Month"

The Berkeleyan, UC Berkeley's weekly email newsletter distributed by the Office of Public Affairs, is featuring a "Kudo of the month" for a campus staffer or team who exemplifies the principle for that month. In May, Cal Dining's Chews to Reuse team was featured. In April, the Berkeleyan highlighted Ruben Mejia, Facilities Manager for the College of Letters & Sciences.



Stay Day highlights principles as key theme

Stay Day, the one-day conference held on May 28 for Berkeley staff who work directly with students, featured the Operating Principles as its theme. Each of the conference sessions focused on the many ways that Berkeley staff support and transform the student experience through the lens of UC Berkeley's Operating Principles. HR to embed principles in recruitment, hiring

To help attract new employees who live by the spirit of the Operating Principles, Human Resources will embed the principles in a number of prominent areas, including job postings, interview questions, and the campus jobs website, jobs.berkeley.edu.

2013 COSA Awards feature principles

In recognizing the recipients of the 2013 Chancellor’s Outstanding Staff Awards (COSA), Chancellor Robert Birgeneau discussed the principles, saying, “This year’s winners also embody the campus operating principles. These principles were developed with input from the campus community and reflect the priorities that guide staff in their mission to support UC Berkeley’s preeminent teaching, research and public service.” Many of the award recipients’ contributions were framed and discussed in the context of the principles.

Staff Appreciation Week to include principles

Staff Appreciation Week is coming up June 10-14. This year's event will incorporate the principles to help frame how Berkeley staff excel in their work here.

Conference rooms renamed after principles

In just one creative example of the ways campus offices are using the principles, the staff at Student Affairs IT decided to rename its conference rooms in honor of the principles.
